Today on average a patient waits 29 days to meet with a doctor. The USA as a whole is expected to be short 90,000 physicians by 2025, meaning the wait to see a physician should continue to lengthen. Due to this month’s long delay many patients are opting out of seeking care for minor illnesses such as, cold or flu because the emergency room is their only timely option.

Novo Nordisk announced on September 29th, 2017 that it has received FDA market approval for its new fast-acting insulin, Fiasp*. The drug is now licensed for use with adults with Type 1 diabetes and adults with Type 2 diabetes. This was the second attempt by Novo Nordisk to gain the FDA’s approval for the long-anticipated fast-acting insulin. In October 2016, the agency withheld approval and asked Novo Nordisk on safety data for Fiasp.

However, employers still carry the largest burden in insuring Americans. A study by the Urban Institute found that through March 2016, 82-83% of workers were offered employer-sponsored insurance.

As you probably know, there are a number of ‘conformance’ resources in FHIR that have a unique ‘canonical’ Url that identifies them globally. Other resources that need to refer to them can do so by addressing them by that URL – for example when a profile (Core or Derived) binds a coded element to a ValueSet, it does so via that URL – as does a Profile referencing an Extension Definition (both Profile and Extension Definition are StructureDefinition resources).

On September 27th, the FDA announced that the Abbott Freestyle Libre Flash glucose monitoring system would be cleared to enter the U.S. marketplace. The Libre Flash differs from all other wearable glucose monitoring systems for people with diabetes in that it does not require fingerstick calibration and it utilizes a sensor that can be worn for up to 10 days.

We received this interesting photo from Stacey Rose, who also shared a snapshot of her family’s story: My daughter and I take this same photo every November for International Diabetes Awareness Day. We’ve been doing this since her diagnosis with Type 1 diabetes seven years ago; she is 12 now.

The drivers allege they were misclassified by the on-demand food delivery app as independent contractors and not as W-2 employees. For its part, GrubHub is arguing that its primary service, which began in 2015, is connecting diners with restaurants and not food delivery.

The on again, off again effort to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA) finally fizzled out yesterday when Republican leadership in the U.S. Senate declined to bring to a vote the Graham-Cassidy bill to repeal the ACA and replace it with block grants to states. The decision reopens the door to bipartisan efforts spearheaded by the Senate’s Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions to draft legislation to stabilize health insurance markets for 2018.
