'Apple is expected to launch its smartwatch today, most likely with its HealthKit platform included. For months, the diabetes community has been speculating about the watch’s capabilities and what the HealthKit platform could do for daily diabetes self-care. Some have even hoped the watch would be able to monitor blood glucose readings without bloodletting, although there is no indication it is designed for this.

'Quick Hit. A new Canadian study provided evidence that a school schedule might impact daily blood glucose control for children with Type 1 diabetes. The study found that students with Type 1 diabetes who had three 45-minute breaks during the school day maintained better blood glucose control than those who received only two 45-minute breaks, according to a Healio report.

'We recently shared news about a new MIT study that used mice models to test an injectable “smart insulin.” This insulin activates only when there are traces of excess glucose in the bloodstream, an innovation which could potentially eliminate or lower the risk of hypoglycemia. Such a treatment could revolutionize insulin treatment for Type 1 diabetes.

Many families – especially those with low to moderate incomes – don’t have sufficient savings to cover a mid- or larger deductible in a private plan, according to an analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation. The study found that less than two-thirds (63%) non-elderly households with incomes above the federal poverty level have sufficient liquid financial assets to cover a mid-range annual deductible $1,200 for an or $2,400 for a family.
