When Apple introduced the Apple Watch Series 4 in September, one of the biggest revelations was the addition of several groundbreaking health-monitoring functions. The device contains a next-generation accelerometer and gyroscope combined with algorithms that can detect when the wearer has fallen. It can analyze wrist trajectory and impact acceleration, sending a notice to the user, which can then be dismissed or used to contact emergency services.

In 2010, Mr. Jerry Liao Jieyuan and his team created an online platform called (Mandarin for ‘to register’) for patients to make consultation appointments with their doctors. Five years later, the platform was as WeDoctor after it raised almost US$400M in investment from the likes of Tencent, Goldman Sachs and Hillhouse Capital. WeDoctor also opened its first hospital in Zhejiang, a province in eastern China, that year.
