Giving social care providers better access to health and care information has been a national priority since the launch of the NHS Long Term Plan in 2019, the year one of the oldest shared care records in England moved onto the Orion Health platform. A project to enhance the interoperability of the Care and Health Information Exchange (CHIE), means care home staff in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight now have easy, secure access to the medical records of residents.

The focus on speedy hospital discharges during the Covid-19 pandemic created a new urgency around the project, as care home staff needed ‘touch of a button’ access to information about residents that was also secure. The solution was found by adding multi-factor authentication, of the kind more usually found in banking or commercial services, to CHIE.

Orion Health incorporated Keycloak, an open source identity and access management solution, into the record. Users download an app that generates a one-time code for access. For added security, they are automatically logged off after a period.

A key benefit, according to NHS Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, is that the cloud-based system gives care home staff more time to care.
