Nuance Communications, a Microsoft company, announced today that WellSpan Health, an integrated healthcare system based in Pennsylvania, will be adding Nuance’s Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) to its group of patient experience-centered solutions.

DAX is a solution that automates and accelerates the creation of clinical documentation during exam room and telehealth visits for immediate entry into an electronic health record system.

York-based WellSpan Health first rolled out its partnership with Nuance in 2020, also using DAX, aiming to reduce administrative tasks that lead to provider burnout.

"Microsoft has long been committed to innovating AI solutions to help hospitals and health systems achieve better outcomes for providers and patients alike,” Kenneth Harper, general manager of DAX at Microsoft, told MobiHealthNews in an email.

"Creating solutions that enhance the patient and provider relationship is at the forefront of our mission, and this is a new step to help WellSpan achieve this. Building on the initial DAX implementation, WellSpan providers will continue to see less burnout and higher-quality patient interactions with DAX Copilot embedded in Epic."

THE LARGER TREND

According to the Annals of Internal Medicine, physicians spend about two hours completing clinical documentation and other administrative tasks for every hour spent with patients.

Documentation burden is often overlooked in the traditional definition of burnout, but is receiving more attention recently as health organizations look to address employee burnout while simultaneously augmenting the patient experience.

Products such as DAX copilot look to close the gap and give providers more time with patients with the hope that this will reduce burnout among providers.

Other companies automating the creation of clinical documentation include San Francisco-based Augmedix, which has progressed from a Google Glass-based clinical documentation startup to a publicly-traded, AI-enabled ambient automation platform.

Therapy Notes is a behavioral health practice management software based out of Pennsylvania, founded in 2010.

AGS Health is an analytics and revenue cycle management company founded in 2011 with offices in Washington, D.C., and Chennai, India.
