BUZUD, a medical device brand in Singapore, has unveiled its latest line of smartwatches with health monitoring features.

Based on a press statement, both DM01 and DM02 smartwatches are built with blood oxygen saturation oximeter sensors to measure blood oxygen levels and monitor sleep quality. It also tracks blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, as well as steps, distance, and burned calories.

The devices transmit these health data via Bluetooth to a mobile app on Android or iOS where these are turned into insights on the Health Metrics dashboard. The watches can also receive text messages and calls from mobile phones through Bluetooth.

Moreover, the smartwatches support 24 sports modes with customisable functions, including training workouts and social apps support.

The company said its new smartwatches have been studied and tested in a clinical trial involving about 3,000 people.

WHY IT MATTERS

Measuring SpO2 and sleep patterns helps identify sleep apnea, a sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts. In Singapore, 30.5% of the population were found to have moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is closely associated with cardiovascular health risks. According to SingHealth, people with OSA are at high risk of getting hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart attacks, abnormal heart rhythms, stroke, and even sudden death.

"Our DM01 and DM02 smartwatches enable the optimal monitoring of consumers’ health, unlocking the innovative ability to alert users that they might have sleep apnea [and] paving the way to help people better track and manage their health," said BUZUD CEO and founder Frankie Fan.

BUZUD is targeting consumers who have been actively seeking to manage their health during the ongoing pandemic. Its latest smartwatches, which are now being sold in Singapore, are part of the company's aim to introduce products that "empower people to take proactive steps to be healthy both physically and mentally".

MARKET SNAPSHOT

Two years ago, Fitbit, one of the most recognisable wearable brands in the world, introduced an update on its SpO2-enabled smartwatches to enable users to check the variability of their blood oxygen levels. In the same year, Apple introduced SpO2 sensors for the first time on the Apple Watch line.

Amazon, meanwhile, was the latest among big wearable brands to incorporate health tracking features on its wearable line. Last year, it launched the Halo View which measures sleep quality and blood oxygen levels.

In other news, BUZUD recently unveiled its blood glucose and uric acid monitoring system for home use. The two-function test system is said to provide an accurate reading within 30 seconds.
