All of Us adds new CMO, Shulkin lands on his feet, and more digital health hires

Shulkin will head up innovation at Sanford Health while the NIH welcomes Dr. Kelly Gebo.

Dr. Kelly Gebo, a Johns Hopkins professor and expert on HIV research, has joined NIH's All of Us Research Program in the key role of Chief Medical and Scientific Officer. Gebo will "lead the program's scientific agenda" according to the NIH, with a particular focus on including under-represented populations. 

“Kelly has the right combination of research skills, leadership experience, and passion for personalized medicine for the job,” Eric Dishman, director of the All of Us Research Program, said in a statment. “I’m delighted to have her join our team in this new position. She brings a wealth of expertise in cohort research, data quality and analysis, and clinical care, and with continued input from diverse stakeholders across the country, will help us further develop our scientific roadmap for this project."

Former VA Secretary Dr. David Shulkin has taken a role at Sanford Health, a large health system serving North and South Dakota, as chief innovation officer. 

“Secretary Shulkin is one of the most talented health care leaders in the country, and he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Sanford Health,” Kelby Krabbenhoft, president and CEO of Sanford Health, said in a statement. “His unique perspective, clinical expertise and powerful voice will further Sanford Health’s continued development and diversification, which is so critical to our ability to bring new treatments and cures to the patients we serve.” 

The VA launched a number of notable technology initiatives during Shulkin's tenure, but also saw its share of scandals. Shulkin left the Department under less than auspicious circumstances in March.

Akiri, the first startup to spin out of AMA accelerator Health2047, has named a new CEO: former Kaiser Permanente CTO David A. Watson. Akiri is working on the interoperability problem thorugh an approach that involves building a network for health information sharing.

"Akiri will streamline and enhance healthcare delivery outcomes by improving the interoperability of data protected by world-class security," Watson said in a statement. "My career has been dedicated to unlocking the value of data in healthcare, so this position truly is a perfect fit. With the support of the American Medical Association and Akiri's talented engineering team, we will overcome one of the biggest challenges in healthcare: how to best secure, share, and adopt trusted health data in real time given the unique parameters and complexities of our system."

Know Labs, a company developing novel wearables for calorie counting and non-invasive glucose monitoring, has hired Dr. James Anderson in the post of medical director. Anderson, who previously ran global clinical diabetes development at Eli Lily and Company, lends some credibility to the company's ambitious mission.

“Dr. Anderson immediately understood the science underlying our technology, and shares our vision for its application to medical diagnostics and therapeutics," Phil Bosua, CEO of Know Labs, said in a statement. "He brings to us a wealth of relevant experience. Working together we will first focus on blood glucose and a wearable non-invasive continuous glucose monitor.”
