Direct Primary Care Well Represented at #HLTH2022

It was a pleasant surprise to see Direct Primary Care (DPC) well represented at the recent #HLTH2022 conference. There is real momentum building for this alternate form of care. Two leading DPC technology innovators, were prominent in the exhibit hall and on the main stage: Hint Health and Elation Health.

DPC is an alternative care model where patients or employers pay a monthly fee directly to a physician practice for a defined set of primary care services. By eliminating payers from the equation and by going with a fixed fee, the overhead and administration required by both patients and practices is greatly reduced.

The number of DPC practices remains relatively small compared to the overall number of practices in the US, but there are more DPC practices opening up each day. According to a study published by Hint Health earlier this year, the number of active DPC clinicians per 100,000 people increased 159% from 2017 to 2021 vs a 6% increase in the number of non-DPC primary care providers per 100,000 people over that same time period.

Elation Health Continues to Add DPC Customers

Kyna Fong, CEO & Co-Founder at Elation Health, is excited about this growth in the DPC market.

“The growth and success of the early DPC entrants is inspiring,” said Fong. “What is also notable is the uptake of the DPC model by employers. Having more employers on board will allow the DPC model to scale.”

Hint Health Expands Their Offering

Another outspoken champion for the DPC model is Zak Holdsworth, Co-Founder & CEO at Hint Health. Holdsworth was on one of the main stages at #HLTH2022 advocating for the DPC approach. He also spent a lot of time educating curious attendees who stopped by the Hint booth on the exhibit floor after his session.

Holdsworth spoke to Healthcare IT Today about the company’s growth. They recently launched Hint Connect – a curated network of DPC clinics that makes it easier for employers and innovative health plans to add a DPC component to their member benefits. They also acquired a DPC EHR aimed at the solo practitioner market.
