Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is being hailed as the missing piece of usability in healthcare. In examples ranging from EHR data migration to revenue cycle management tasks, supply chain and more, RPA is helping hospitals, health systems and technology partners keep up with increased demand, ever-changing regulations and the challenge of uncertainty in today’s healthcare landscape.
Surprisingly, many aren’t aware of the benefits of adding automation to an existing digital health strategy. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused health care organizations to adjust to clinical and financial challenges that were previously unthinkable. There are many processes that can benefit from the increased efficiency, reduced manual data input, and 24/7 staffing that RPA provides. Employees can gain a reprieve from tedious time drains by allowing these processes to be managed by “bots,”
Some people think of “bots” as the 1st step in eliminating or replacing jobs, but in reality, they’re more like an eager coworker who actually wants to take over tedious, time consuming tasks, with 100% accuracy (so no performance checking is needed). They’re always available to pitch in, even after hours and on weekends. RPA can replicate any activity that a person can manually perform on a computer screen, including simple data entry to mind-numbing tasks requiring multiple decision points that drain human workers, and this allows humans to concentrate on higher priority, and more rewarding, tasks like person-to-person communication. So think of them as the coworker you want.
