Three Big Questions for Stage 3 & Patient Engagement

Chilmark Research

For many, the delay of Stage 3 of the Meaningful Use program evoked a collective sigh of relief, providing a much-needed extra year to focus on the challenging requirements for patient engagement and interoperability. The language used thus far raises much speculation about what exactly this inclusion will mean when it hits the front lines. Each of these use cases brings with it a unique set of programmatic and technical components.

My plan was to just go quietly into the night, but looking through the recently-released Meaningful Use 3 requirements convinced me that I really ought to put this out there. But the technologies were in no way appropriate to actually deploy in the real world, so things fell into place nicely — success at the Connectathon allowed EHR vendors to claim high ground on interoperability, but without any risk that it would actually be implemented for real.

The The Five Biggest Areas of Opportunity for Digital Health

The Digital Health Corner

Electronic health records (EHRs) and personal fitness trackers have helped create awareness through use. According to most recent statistics from the Office of the National Coordinator, use of EHRs has increased from 20% in 2004 to 87% in 2015. Increasing healthcare consolidation of hospitals has exacerbated the problem of lack of interoperability. There remain many opportunities for technologies to assist in achieving true interoperability.

Standardizing Healthcare Terms: Challenges, Benefits, and Future

I understand all too well the impact and benefits that standard healthcare terms contribute in leveraging interoperability and providing healthcare with big data for research and population health, and why it’s a lot easier said than done. Also, due to the variation of vocabularies found within different EHRs, mapping presents a major hurdle to interoperability. The future of standardization and interoperability is looking brighter.

Why Mutual-Authorized-TLS?

From an Interoperability perspective one is using the TLS to Mutually Authenticate. This is the concern that is addressed through Interoperability Profiling. This is all that Profiling can address, in that the Interoperability layer defines how the two sides authenticate each other. This is enough from an Interoperability perspective, but is not the end of the story. This is especially true if one uses a truststore like the ones found in Browsers.
