Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall: Has Healthcare Become a Consumer Industry? – #HITsm Chat Topic

We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this month’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 12/2 at Noon ET (9 AM PT).  This month’s chat will be hosted by Erica Olenski Johansen (@thegr8chalupa) on the topic Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall: Has Healthcare Become a Consumer Industry?

It seems as if every day there is an announcement from a once front-and-center consumer brand announcing healthcare services. Similarly, traditional healthcare providers and payers are playing with new, innovative concepts to engage with patients in their care better and more meaningfully. Things are changing – there is no doubt about that.

Amid those changes, echoes of one question are reverberating throughout product development meetings, between industry trade show booths, and among ‘blue check’ and unofficial Twitter handles alike:

Has healthcare become a consumer industry?

This question is more prominent than it ever has been. And – to be fair – the answer remains as elusive as the question is pervasive. And we want to know the answer.

In many ways – both as professionals and patients who use the services provided by the healthcare industry – we need and want to know what we’re working with. We want and need to know how to orient ourselves in the highly complex economy that demands more financial attention year after year. We want and need to know how to engage with the organizations that identify as healthcare providers, insurers, and others. We want and need to know who we are – patients, consumers, or something else?

So, #HITsm, we ask you this question (and a few others) to spark debate, challenge the status quo, and advance innovation: Has healthcare become a consumer industry?

Join us for this week’s #HITsm chat where we’ll be discussing the following topics.
