SCHIO HIE’s Approach to Identity Management

Identity management is one of the top problems HIEs face today.  There are numerous complications that happen when you try to ensure the identity of a patient.  To better address identity management at SCHIO, Dan Chavez, Executive Director of SCHIO (Santa Cruz Health Information Organization), turned to Verato.  We had a chance to catch up with Chavez at the DirectTrust and Civitas conference to learn more about this decision.

First up, we asked Chavez how SCHIO is approaching identity management and the challenges that their organization faces.  Needless to say, identity management is complicated and they wanted to improve how they were doing it since it’s so important to both the clinicians and patients they serve.

I also asked Chavez how expanding HIE data to include things like SDoH impacted identity management and whether it made it more challenging.  While this is more challenging, doing so also is an important part of SCHIO’s efforts to be a health data utility.  Check out the video interview below to learn more about what Chavez means when he says SCHIO is a health data utility.
