What’s Next? The Future of Healthcare IT Social Media – #HITsm Chat Topic

We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 8/5 at Noon ET (9 AM PT).  This week’s chat will be hosted by Erica Olenski Johansen (@thegr8chalupa) on the topic “What’s Next? The Future of Healthcare IT Social Media.

Friends, we have so much to talk about! The last twelve years have been some of the most formative and important of our careers – and in some cases, our lives.

Looking back to 2010, the health IT initiatives of that time consisted of getting up-to-speed as quickly as possible about Meaningful Use and helping to move health systems and clinical practices away from paper and analog processes to electronic and Internet-enabled technologies. In that year – and the few around it – we experienced a real and almost literal digital transformation of the healthcare industry.

The early healthcare communities on Twitter – such as #hcsm – responded to this. They were drawing voices across clinical disciplines, dynamic conversations were unfolding, and collaborations were being discovered that were proving to have a lasting impact on the business of healthcare. However, in the transformation the industry was experiencing, a critical voice was missing from those conversations – the voice of the stakeholder group responsible for making that digital transformation possible: the IT professionals.

#HITsm was born to make space for a larger crowd, inclusive of the clinical voices making waves and the IT professionals helping to enable the changes the industry wanted – and needed. And, in the spirit of inclusivity, #HITsm aimed to invite patients to the conversation with a formal seat at the table.

As we all know, a lot has happened in the past twelve years, but many things remain the same. Most importantly, there is a need for ongoing dialog among clinicians, IT professionals, executives, and patients that is inclusive in spirit, productively collaborative, and optimistically inspiring. Healthcare is on the verge of a new flavor of digital transformation, and I believe we are all feeling it, especially in the wake of the pandemic.

This is why #HITsm will ensure a place for those conversations. But, like the rest of the industry, the community must ebb and flow to evolve to meet the voices where they are – whether that remains on Twitter, in a hashtag, or we explore other channels to expand engagement so that it is more productive, inclusive, and inspiring. Regardless of how we evolve, my hopes and wishes are that we continue to talk. We must talk about what’s best for all of us – on social media, within the walls of a health system, or when we are at home.

It is with great honor to resume my role as the moderator with this month’s #HITsm tweet chat as we aim to unpack some of our industry’s biggest obstacles opportunities. This month, I would like us to discuss the transformation we are undergoing as professionals and patients in this industry – and what the role of social media will be in 2022 to support those experiences.

Join us for this week’s #HITsm chat where we’ll be discussing the following topics.

Topics for this week’s #HITsm Chat:

T1: Let’s start by dreaming a bit – what if we reimagined healthcare delivery? Describe (in detail) how it looks/sounds/feels. #HITsm

T2: More dreaming: what technologies and solutions do you think are the most promising for delivering care five years from now? What about 20 years from now? …50 years from now? #HITsm

T3: What (types of) people across the industry would need to collaborate to make those ideas a reality? #HITsm

T4: The patient perspective: what patient experience have you had that you would have liked to see addressed with technology or innovation? #HITsm

T5: Here’s a fun one – what social media platform is best for an inclusive, collaborative, and inspiring dialog that can connect people around a common purpose? #HITsm

Bonus: And a personal one – what advice do you have for me as someone in a moderator role? Is there something you like to see more or less of? #HITsm

As always, we look forward to learning with you alongside the #HITsm community. This means we want to know how we can do better and what you’d like to see in terms of our community dialog.
