Is Your Healthcare IT Company Eco-Friendly? – #HITsm Chat Topic

We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 4/29 at Noon ET (9 AM PT).  This week’s chat will be hosted by Ray Miller (@ray_hmiller) from @hcittoday on the topic “Is Your Healthcare IT Company Eco-Friendly?

While Earth day may have been last week, our efforts to save the planet need to be year round. Because of our actions, the planet is heating up and plastic and other non-disposables litter our ground and ocean. Simply, we are using and throwing away too much, too quickly. So in order to save our planet and leave a cleaner home for our children we need to slow down and find alternative ways to reduce waste. Hence the famous line: reduce, reuse and recycle.

However, it is inevitable that when we start to talk about saving our planet, the responsibility seems to always fall on the individual. And while there are ways for us to do our part individually, the true responsibility needs to be on the shoulders of companies and organizations. For example, in 2017 the movement ‘Save the Turtles’ began. Its purpose was to get people to stop using single-use plastic straws because our oceans were filled with straws and turtles were choking on them. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this, if you can avoid using a straw then you should, to help the environment. However, it only focused on what individuals were doing to contribute to the plastic in our oceans and not companies and organizations. It is estimated that 20 to 40 percent of the plastic in our oceans is from fishing companies. Yet we focus on straws instead of these companies.

Tech companies and organizations are not exempt. They may not be contributing to the amount of waste as much as other industries are, but they still have a huge impact on our planet. With technology, we are worried about carbon footprints and greenhouse gas emissions. Running a company, especially a healthcare IT company, takes a lot of energy to do. For example, if mining one NFT takes 35 kWh of electricity and emits 20 kg of carbon dioxide, imagine what a whole tech company uses and emits. So join us for this week’s #HITsm chat where we’ll be digging into what it means to be eco-friendly as a healthcare IT company!
