Healthcare Innovation – #HITsm Chat Topic

We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 5/21 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by John Lynn (@techguy) from @hcitoday on the topic “Healthcare Innovation.

Talking about innovation in healthcare is always a challenge.  First, healthcare seems to work at a snail’s pace.  Although, COVID-19 forced us to question that challenge.  Second, healthcare is a highly regulated industry.  Those regulations hamper some of the creativity that could be brought into healthcare and make new thinking a challenge.  Third, the experimentation mentality of other industries that drives many innovations just doesn’t work in healthcare.  While it’s ok if your Uber Eats doesn’t get delivered on time while you experiment with a new model, you have to be much more careful in healthcare when your experimentation could actually cause someone to lose their life or quality of life.

Needless to say, there are plenty of things that make healthcare innovation hard.  However, it’s worth asking ourselves if we use the above reasons as an excuse not to innovate.  Is innovation in healthcare available and we choose to not go after it because it’s hard or because we’re comfortable with how things are going?

My favorite example of this is when someone claims something can’t be done because of “HIPAA.”  While it’s important for any healthcare organization or company to consider HIPAA, I’ve very rarely seen HIPAA as a blocker for any innovation that wanted to be done.  At worst case, you have to ask the patient for permission to do something.  However, most of the time that you hear HIPAA is a problem it’s because someone doesn’t want to do whatever is being proposed for some other reason.  However, once you invoke the HIPAA, then the whole team has to dot all their i’s and cross all their t’s to ensure that indeed it’s not a HIPAA violation.

In this week’s chat, we’ll dive into innovation in healthcare.  We’ll talk about the innovative things that are happening even amidst the challenges mentioned above.  Plus, we’ll talk about the barriers to innovation and how to overcome them.  We’ll also share where we expect innovation in healthcare to come from and what we can do to spur healthcare innovation.

Join us for this week’s #HITsm chat where we’ll discuss the following.

  • Your description of the challenges in improving healthcare are all true on the disease-side of healthcare. We have 70% of the population without disease.
The most disruptive force in marketing today is the consumers demand for Personalization. Many clients without disease are seeking Longevity and can benefit from Personalized Research tests . To stay ahead of your wellness competition you must leverage new data analysis and imaging technology to meet their needs
At the turn of the century in 2000 Christensen and colleagues wrote in a 2000 article in the Harvard Business Review that Healthcare is ripe for disruptive innovation.
Healthcare has changed radically in the past 20+ years, but broadly speaking, Christensen’s statement still applies. Healthcare’s entrenched powers have muted the need for personalization that has transformed all other segments of our economy.
By focusing on each client’s movement from normal to enhanced vitality you can overcome these business startup challenges you clearly describe. The new laboratory science and technology are available to provide personalized healthcare. Do we have the will to move forward?
