Healthcare Ransomware – #HITsm Chat Topic

We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 6/11 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by John Lynn (@techguy) from @hcitoday on the topic “Healthcare Ransomware.

I’ve learned an important lesson in life.  If everyone was just honest, things would be a lot better.  Credit cards would cost almost nothing to process.  We wouldn’t ever have to lock our houses or are cars.  Whole industries wouldn’t exist and that would be good.

Unfortunately, not everyone is honest and we’re faced with this challenge every day.  That’s always been true in healthcare security.  Pretty much as long as computers have been around, we’ve been dealing with dishonest people trying to breach those systems.  Check out this EXPO.health presentation to hear a history of it.  While these hackers and breaches of systems might make for some good movies, it’s a pain that every healthcare CIO and CISO has to deal with and likely keeps them up at night.

While viruses and malware we’re a problem, there’s something really pernicious about ransomware.  In a ransomware incident, they can literally hold a healthcare organization’s data hostage until the organization pays or restores from backup.  I don’t have to explain how this could literally cost someone their lives.

Unfortunately, incidents of ransomware are more and more common in healthcare and in every other industry.  I mean, if ransomware can hit a meat packer and a pipeline, basically no one is immune.

In this week’s #HITsm chat we’ll be talking about ransomware in healthcare.  We’ll discuss if we’re ready for it and things healthcare organizations can do to prepare for the attack and to prevent attacks.  Let’s share what we’ve all learned and make sure we’re as prepared as possible for a ransomware attack.

Join us for this week’s #HITsm chat where we’ll discuss the return to the office.

Topics for this week’s #HITsm Chat:

T1: How would you react if a piece of ransomware hit your personal life? #HITsm

T2: Is your organization ready for a ransomware incident? What have they done to prepare or what do they need to still do? #HITsm

T3: What’s the best downtime procedure for a ransomware incident? #HITsm

T4: Do you pay off the ransomware or not? Why or why not? #HITsm

T5: What’s needed to mitigate ransomware from happening? What can be done to minimize the damage if/when a ransomware incident happens? #HITsm

Bonus: If you could takeover one person’s Twitter account for a day, who would it be and what would you post? #HITsm
