Lifepoint Health is Using Modern Technology to Make Patient Data Actionable

We recently had a chance to sit down with Jessica Beegle, Senior Vice President, Chief Innovation Officer at Lifepoint Health, who shared with us that her past experience has given her a unique view in crafting the patient experience. Prior to Lifepoint Health, Beegle worked at Amazon AWS and Google, companies that are known for creating and using cutting- edge technology to deliver results.

At Lifepoint Health, she was faced with many of the health IT “realities” that multiple hospitals and health systems across the nation are dealing with. The main issue being legacy technologies that don’t easily communicate with each other and don’t allow for easy access to clinical data.  How could she tap into that wealth of data and provide great patient experiences using modern technology? She shares that experienced partners like Clinical Architecture helped to streamline the process.

A Fresh Perspective on the Care Delivery System

The other reality that Beegle and those of us in healthcare face is the changing expectations of patients.  While patients of the past were more passive with their care provider, healthcare delivery systems are now faced with patients who want to play a proactive role in their own care. They expect a consumer experience that looks more like what they experience in the rest of their lives.

For Lifepoint Health, this meant approaching the problem with a fresh perspective. They sought to bridge the gap between what could be done with legacy health IT systems and the need to aggregate and organize data across systems. This would help to create the type of care experience patients now expect.

Modernizing Legacy Systems with Data Quality in Mind

Like every health system, Lifepoint Health has hundreds of health IT systems in their organization which each serve a unique purpose.  Unfortunately, many of these systems operate independently and don’t share data. The reality is that many legacy IT systems were created before data sharing was available and lack that capability.

Another challenge with legacy systems is data quality. Beegle recognized the need to bring partners together to aggregate, clean, and standardize the data in one system to improve the quality and make it actionable. As she and her team undertook this initiative, they knew that it wasn’t enough to just aggregate all of the data into one system.  The data would need to be normalized and organized so that clinicians and patients could trust the data.

Lifepoint Health turned to Clinical Architecture to ensure the data migration was done in a way that protected and improved the quality of the data which included integrating data from various EHRs across 60 facilities and mapping the data to a common standard. What surprised Beegle was how quickly Clinical Architecture was able to normalize and standardize all of the data from Lifepoint Health’s various systems. The timeline of this initiative was seven months from kickoff to go-live. Charlie Harp, CEO at Clinical Architecture commented that he enjoys working with Lifepoint Health because they have a real vision for what they want to do with the data to improve the lives of patients and doctors.

Refined Data is the Foundation for Improved Care

Modern technology that leverages a foundation of high quality data can reduce clinician burnout and further patient care.   By recognizing the need to organize, modernize and liberate data from legacy systems, Beegle has put Lifepoint Health in a position to best collect and use patient data to serve its communities.

Watch the interview below to hear Beegle dive into more details of the initiative.  She shares how Lifepoint Health worked with partners to bring in modern technologies to standardize, organize, and analyze data which is ultimately used to better serve patients. Beegle also shares the benefits of working with experienced partners on large-scale initiatives.
