Back to the Basics: Implications of Interoperability – #HITsm Chat Topic

We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this month’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 9/2 at Noon ET (9 AM PT).  This month’s chat will be hosted by Erica Olenski Johansen (@thegr8chalupa) on the topic Back to the Basics: Implications of Interoperability.

When #HITsm first began, the initial conversations were rooted in a mission to invite health IT professionals to the larger industry conversation. At that time, the chats were inspired by advancements in interoperability, including some rather niche healthcare standards discussions, including HL7 v2, HL7 v3, CDA, and eventually FHIR.

Fast forward to 2022, interoperability is more top-of-mind than ever. Excitingly, what had been a rather niche dialog has expanded to a much larger audience, and even many users (e.g., patients) understand the basics of interoperability/integration and the value it brings to the experience of an application.

Furthermore, we are learning as an industry that interoperability can be influenced by – and may be influencing – social determinants of health (SDoH), health equity, digital literacy, technological bias, and other qualifiable measures of care delivery. Arguably, interoperability is much more than merely data integration. It is ultimately our technological experience of care.

Recently, the buzz around interoperability has been unmistakable. Thanks to HIMSS’23 prep in full swing alongside The Civitas Networks for Health 2022 Annual Conference, folks are discussing possibilities for improvements in interoperability with fervor and optimism.

So without further ado, this month, our #HITsm chat will return to its roots and revisit progress made in interoperability over the last decade, discuss where it is headed, as well as what may be needed so that platforms, applications, and emerging technologies are seamless, increasingly secure, and in service of wellbeing for all.

Join us for this week’s #HITsm chat where we’ll be discussing the following topics.

Topics for this week’s #HITsm Chat:

T1: In the past decade, what was the biggest thing to happen to interoperability that advanced its progress? #HITsm

T2: What are the biggest challenges ahead for interoperability? #HITsm

T3: Does interoperability influence or impact initiatives in health equity, digital literacy, or social determinants of health (SDoH)? Why or why not? #HITsm

T4: How important or useful are healthcare standards today? Are they more or less relevant today than in the past? #HITsm

T5: How can health IT professionals improve the general public’s understanding of the value of interoperability? #HITsm

Bonus: It’s my birthday today! To help me celebrate, please share a non-profit organization you are passionate about supporting and why they are so great. #HITsm
