A Look at the Hospital Room of the Future at Tampa General Hospital

When healthcare staff approach a hospital room, it’s important to know basic things about the patient like their preferred language, whether they’re in isolation, or whether they’re not supposed to eat (an NPO order). Traditionally, these facts are handled through physical markers or even buried in the patient record. The “digital white board” and “digital door sign” technologies from eVideon display the necessary information automatically where it’s clearly visible and provide a look into what the hospital room of the future looks like powered by technology.

Amy Bender, Informatics Manager, and Richard Crews, Inpatient Informatics Analyst II, at Tampa General Hospital, describe in this video what it’s like to have the digital door sign available in their hospital. Information is often taken directly from their EHR and displayed at the entrance to the room. No longer does a nurse have to take extra time to post a physical marker.

The hospital is careful to limit the information to what is truly needed, and not produce information overload. Putting too much information would mean that crucial information would be missed. They do display a few more facts, such as the nurse in charge of that patient.  Plus, the signs can be customized to a hosptial’s individual preferences.

Beyond the immediate impacts on nurse productivity and patient safety, Bender says that eVideon’s technology makes the hospital look “first-class” and shows that it’s keeping up with best practices.  This has a great impact on patient satisfaction and how they feel about their experience at the hospital.

eVideon can provide other useful communications, such as a connection to room service, and reminders for safety checks. Check out our video interview below where Bender and Crews describe some other future plans for their service.
