MEDITECH EHR Migration and Legacy Data Management

EHR migrations are becoming more common as many healthcare organizations switch EHRs or choose to upgrade to a new version of their EHR.  That was the situation Magnolia Regional Health Center found themselves in when they migrated to a new version of the MEDITECH EHR.

When you face an EHR migration, one of the most important and challenging decisions you have to make is how and what you’ll do with the legacy EHR data.  Do you convert all the data?  Do you convert part of the data and move the rest of it to a legacy archive?  Do you not move over any data from the old EHR?  How do you handle migrating from multiple systems?  These questions have important care implications and legal medical record retention implications for a healthcare organization.  Not to mention financial implications related to software licensing and ongoing A/R collections to name just a few.

In order to share Magnolia Regional Health Center’s experience migrating EHRs, we sat down with Brian Davis, CHCIO, Chief Information Officer at Magnolia Regional Health Center, and Jim Hammer, PMP, SVP at Harmony Healthcare IT, to hear why they chose to only migrate part of the records to the new version of MEDITECH and what they did with the EHR data they didn’t migrate.

Davis also shared some of his migration and archive vendor selection process and what he found were the important vendor differentiators in the marketplace.  Plus, Hammer shared what differentiates the Harmony Healthcare IT HealthData Archiver product and what they had seen as the most common approaches to EHR migration and legacy archive with their customers.  They also address the question of migrating other non-clinical systems and the benefits one can expect from a health archiving solution.
