A new study confirms what many with diabetes have known all along – that staying healthy comes at a steep price. Researchers with the Health Care Cost Institute found that health care costs for people with diabetes on private insurance plans was about 3.6 times more than health care costs for those without diabetes. Health care spending was highest for adults with diabetes in the 55-65 age bracket, but the second-highest spending was for children with diabetes, ages 0-18.

In a recent Kaiser Family Foundation survey, the results proved the Affordable Care Act’s 2016 open enrollment had a much-needed push from assisters and brokers. The open enrollment period lasted from November 1, 2015 through January 31, 2016, and for the third year the KFF conducted this survey to ascertain information on the consumer enrollment experience with the Health Insurance Marketplace when using assistance programs.

Think the Health Insurance Marketplace has the highest premiums? Think again. A report by the Commonwealth Fund reveals that the ACA’s Health Insurance Marketplace is not the most expensive place to purchase health care. The study came from extensive data research on the part of the Commonwealth Fund, derived from ACA-compliance information submitted by insurers to the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight.

It comes as no surprise that UnitedHealth Group is not a fan of the Affordable Care Act. This year, the health care provider claimed a financial hit in 2015 due to the ACA with threats to withdraw from the Health Insurance Marketplace altogether. While that may still be in the cards, California is another state where UnitedHealth will no longer participate in the ACA’s Marketplace.

Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act was finalized on May 18, 2016, and will be coming into effect two months from that date on July 18, 2016. However, any changes to health insurance and group plans will not be required to go into effect until January 1, 2017. The law applies to a wide range of health care and health insurance entities that receive federal financial assistance.
