Life When Every Day Can Be a Medical Emergency

Insulin Nation

When I woke up this morning, I felt tired. My mouth was dry. My head hurt. I had to pee. I even threw up a little. I had been drinking last night, so I thought I was just a bit hung over. I made my way downstairs and drew blood from my finger – a morning ritual since I was 14. The meter read 22mm/oL (396 mg/dL). “Well, that explains it,” I said to myself.

For Common Ailments, You Might Not Need an In-Office Visit…

American Well

This post originally appeared on [link]. Misty Evans’ son was in his pajamas, sitting on the couch, as he talked to a doctor. When asked, his mom, of Lincoln, put the phone close to his mouth so the doc could see the back of his throat. They were taking advantage of telehealth, a new service that lets patients see a doctor via computer, tablet or phone anytime, anywhere.

Interoperability will never be perfect - not even FHIR

Healthcare Exchange Standards

I just finished a fantastic book " In the Land of Invented Languages: Adventures in Linguistic Creativity, Madness, and Genius " by Arika Okrent. This book was recommended by Grahame Grieve. I don't have evidence he recommended it, but I am sure it was Grahame. I wondered why he would have recommended such an obscure book. I may have figured out why, but I might have completely over blown the thought.

Stories of poor security from vendors that should know better

Healthcare Exchange Standards

I simply must point to a very specific episode of SecurityNow , a very good podcast every week. Episode 567 because he describes in detail five different products/services that simply did not do security right. All might look like well secured products to marketing, sales, or any leadership. But not done right at all. Sorry that the podcast is 2 hours long, but the whole thing is worth listening to because the whole two hours is full of story after story.

For those thinking that the IRS may come a’calling, that won’t be happening anymore…at least when it comes to initial contact. In a memo dated May 20, 2016, phone calls are no longer the acceptable means for making initial contact to those taxpayers who may be facing an audit. Going forward, form letters will be the way to go, with telephone calls being allowed 14 days following the date of the mailed letter.

A Clearer Picture of Telehealth’s Opportunities & Challenges

American Well

Telehealth is a phenomenon growing at breakneck pace, with some industry analysts estimating the global telehealth technology market at $18 billion and projecting 18-percent annual growth through 2020. It’s happening so fast, in fact, that adoption can sometimes outpace our grasp of exactly how providers are using telehealth. We need a better picture of both the challenges and opportunities healthcare providers see on a growing list of telehealth applications and delivery models.

Louisiana Joins Other States In Medicaid Expansion

ACA Times

**Updated 7/6/2016, 2:15pm**. Of all the hot topics surrounding the Affordable Care Act , the state-to-state expansion of Medicaid is perhaps the hottest. Medicaid expansion arguably draws the line between Democrats and Republicans when it comes to health care reform. Many states have battled with bringing Medicaid to those who truly need it, and despite the surplus of federal dollars offered to states that participate, it still becomes a never-ending battle of whether or not to adopt Medicaid.
