I went to a blockchain conference yesterday. All the experts were clear that this early days. Caution, but excitement. They were all full of encouragement to try stuff out. All recognized that there is much misinformation and hype. All recognized anyone using blockchain is taking a big risk. None would state any prediction of the future. They also all recognized that those that have succeeded have reaped great rewards.

There is good news for those who have had uncertainties over billing for telehealth procedures. At the start of November 2017, the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) passed their final rules for the 2018 Quality Payment Program (QPP) and Physician Fee Schedule (PFS). Part of the update addresses the realities of natural disasters and other unavoidable circumstances.

Last week we held our first New Zealand ‘ Clinicians on FHIR ‘ seminar at the HINZ conference in Rotorua. This was really important for me, as it was the first ‘public outing’ of a seminar format that I’d like to see could be repeated wherever Clinicians are getting their first taste of FHIR, and showing how they can participate more fully in FHIR based Interoperability projects.

As we reported this week, the IRS has issued guidance on its plans to issue penalty notices by the end of this year to Applicable Large Employers (ALEs) it believes were not in compliance with the requirements of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). That guidance was made as an update to questions 52 – 58 in the IRS’s Questions and Answers on Employer Shared Responsibility Provisions Under the Affordable Care Act.

During the course of our conversation, Wright, the mother of a child with Type 1 diabetes, laments less the loss of her house in Katy, Texas to Hurricane Harvey than she does the loss of her son’s diabetes supplies. It is one of the few times that she allows herself to feel sorrow for what she and her family endured during the hurricane.

The holiday serves as an occasion to both honor those who have served in our armed forces and to ask whether we, as a nation, are doing right by them.
