We all know in life that there are some things that are just better than others. For example, in my experience name brand corn flakes are just better than generic ones. Turns out, the same is true with health IT software and more specifically legacy application and archiving solutions. That’s the experience Dave Lundal, CIO at Children’s Minnesota, and Dave Skordahl, VP Business Development at Harmony Healthcare IT, shared with me at the ViVE 2022 conference in Miami.
Children’s Minnesota had acquired a practice that they moved onto a new EHR and they needed to provide their users easy access to the old EHR data. They’d been working with an archiving vendor that was falling short of expectations, so they ended that project and started working with Harmony Healthcare IT to archive their legacy EHR data.
Skordahl and Lundal both highlighted the importance of security when it came to any legacy archiving project. Lundal suggested that archiving legacy applications was a key security effort to get old application data to a more secure location than on a computer under someone’s desk. Plus, it’s essential that your archiving vendor understands how to protect that data as well. Otherwise, you’re archive is just a honeypot for hackers.
When asked what was the most important feature when it came to a legacy application and archive solution, Skordahl highlighted how important easy access to the legacy records is for healthcare organization in a format they trust. The single sign-on access makes it easy for care providers to be able to access the legacy data which ensures continuity of care for the patients.
