Private School Expels Child With Type 1

Recently, a parent revolt at a private church-affiliated school in Charlotte, North Carolina has morphed into a lawsuit under that state’s disability discrimination law. It’s alleged that two children, one diagnosed with a chronic abdominal migraine disorder and one with Type 1 diabetes, had been expelled from the Calvary Church private school in Charlotte because of their conditions.

Over 103,000 Selected Plans in Week 12

More than 103,000 consumers selected Affordable Care Act health insurance plans through the Healthcare.gov online marketplace during the 12th week of open enrollment, according to the “weekly snapshot report” issued by the Department of Health and Human Services. Enrollment ends Jan. 31. The volume for the week of Jan. 17 to Jan. 23 was down from the 153,600 who selected insurance plans during the 11th week of open enrollment.

State Medicaid and children’s health insurance programs have become significantly more efficient in their operations and more effective at enrolling those who qualify for coverage. As a result, more people are being covered, and the programs are operating more smoothly. Those are among the findings of the 14 th annual 50-state survey of Medicaid and CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program) operations by the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured and Georgetown University.

A year after federal regulators barred employers from offering so-called “skinny” Affordable Care Act health plans that did not pay for hospital stays, some employers are presenting workers with plans for 2016 that exclude payment for outpatient surgeries.
