A Look Back at 12 Years of #HITsm Chats – #HITsm Chat Topic

We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 7/29 at Noon ET (9 AM PT).  This week’s chat will be hosted by John Lynn (@techguy) on the topic “A Look Back at 12 Years of #HITsm Chats.

Hard to believe it’s been nearly 12 years since the #HITsm Twitter chats were started.  Almost 6 years ago, we took over the #HITsm chat from the Health Standards blog (which ironically is now gone) and Corepoint (which was acquired by Lyniate).  This will be our 272nd #HITsm chat that we’ve hosted of about 552 #HITsm Twitter chats that have been held since the start of the #HITsm community.

Needless to say, we’ve learned a lot from each other over the years and we’ve been able to connect with thousands of incredible health IT professionals, patients, doctors, healthcare leaders, and more.  Being able to connect with such incredible people has been what’s made #HITsm special for me.  Plus, knowing each other virtually made meetups at conferences like HIMSS that much more special.  I know for many it literally transformed the conference experience.  I know it has for me.

Over the last year or so, I’d been thinking about what the future of the #HITsm chats would be.  Has it run it’s useful life as now most of us know each other.  Discovering new people was the thing I loved at the start of the #HITsm chats and now most of us on Twitter kind of know each other.  The weekly conversations with people I trusted and respected were still good, but I’ll admit that the #HITsm chats had kind of grown stale with everything we have going on here at Healthcare IT Today.  I felt like the #HITsm community needed fresh eyes, fresh perspectives, and new energy behind it.

With this in mind, I reached out to Erika Olenski Johansen (@thegr8chalupa), who was who I consider to be the real creator of the #HITsm chat who built it up in the early days, to see if she wanted to retake the reigns of the chat.  After some conversation and thinking, we decided she’d provide some great new (or it is renewed) energy to the chat and we both thought that moving the chat to a monthly rhythm made sense so she could create specific effort around a monthly chat rather than spreading the community across a weekly one.

If you follow #HITsm on Twitter, then you probably saw this change already.  Healthcare IT Today is still happy to host the now monthly #HITsm chat with @thegr8chalupa (Twitter handles are better than names, no?) at the helm starting next week on August 5th and then monthly on the first Friday of every month at the usual Noon ET (9 AM PT) time.

Now that the announcements and changes are out of the way, for this week’s chat we want to look back at the past 12 years.  What chats do you remember most?  What’s the chat meant to you?  What did it accomplish?  We’ve invited a bunch of the OG members of the chat to take part as we look back at the past and kick off things for the future.

Join us for this week’s #HITsm chat where we’ll be discussing the following topics.
