CIO Podcast – Episode 55: Healthcare Security with Steven Ramirez

For the 55th episode of the CIO podcast hosted by Healthcare IT Today, we are joined by Steven Ramirez, VP & CISO at Renown Health to talk about healthcare security! We kick off the episode by discussing the biggest challenges facing the healthcare industry today. And out of those, Ramirez points out the one that needs our immediate attention. Then look into zero trust and what it means for healthcare organizations. Next Ramirez shares what Renown Health’s cybersecurity looks like at a high level and how their third party vendors like Clearwater play into their strategy.

We then move on by taking a look at where healthcare organizations are in the process of shifting their cybersecurity from firewalls to continuous risk analysis. Ramirez then offers his insights on what we need to be doing to make that shift in the best and most secure way possible, rather than a basic check it off the list chore. Next we pick his brain to see what Ramirez thinks of the 405 private/public efforts to collaborate on security practices. And to end the episode, Ramirez shares advice to anyone that is just starting out in healthcare security.

Here’s a look at the questions and topics we discuss on this episode:

  • What are the biggest cybersecurity threats facing the healthcare industry right now? Which of these would you call Mission Critical above all others?
  • Tell us more about the buzzword you mention, zero trust. What does that mean for a healthcare organization?
  • What does Renown Health’s cybersecurity strategy look like at a high level?
  • How do third party vendors like Clearwater that you work with fit into that strategy?
  • Where are we at in the shift from putting up firewalls to continuous and ongoing risk analysis?
  • What do healthcare organizations need to do to move to a more holistic and continuous approach to cybersecurity, beyond the transactional check-the-box compliance we see so regularly in security risk analysis?
  • What do you think of the 405D private/public effort to collaborate on healthcare industry security practices?
  • What advice would you give to someone just starting out in healthcare security?
