Behavioral Health is in an interesting space since it’s suffered through many stigmas and missed out on many reimbursement and stimulus efforts that have been available to medical care. That seems like it’s starting to change as many realize the importance of treating mental health and overcoming the past stigmas. However, behavioral health still suffers from a really challenging problem: not all behavioral health professionals are created equal.
Unfortunately, many people think that any counselor or psychiatrist can treat any mental health issue. That’s just not the case. Many mental health professionals have specialized into something very specific. If I were to compare what happens in mental health to medical care, it would be like us sending a patient with a skin condition to an orthopedic surgeon. Sure, the ortho doctors medical training could help that patient, but it’s absolutely not what you want for that patient. The same is true for mental health where a psychologist that’s trained on addiction isn’t the best person to treat a client with anxiety and yet that’s sadly what happens for many today.
I recently sat down with Trevor Colhoun, CEO & Co-Founder at TPN.health, to talk about this problem and learn more about the network of behavioral health professionals they created. Colhoun shares with us about the state of mental health and what he’s hearing from behavioral health professionals he talks to every day. Plus, he shares why they decided to create TPN.health and dives into more detail about the referral network problem we mention above.
Check out the video interview below to learn more about the TPN.health network, how they vet mental health professionals for their network, and how they’re able to offer free behavioral health CEs to their members.
