We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 9/17 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by Grace Vinton (@HITeawithGrace) from @AmendolaComm on the topic “The Patient Voice.”
We are seeing the terms “Patient Voice” and “Patient Perspective” pop up more often across the digital health ecosphere. What do they mean? And why are these terms popping up now?
Throughout the years, I’ve had some deep one-on-one conversations with healthcare, HIT, and life sciences leaders and innovators in the digital health space. I’ve shared my personal experience working in HIT communications, going through a serious health event after giving birth to my third child, and then living with seemingly undiagnosable chronic pain that spring-boarded me towards an unexpected and challenging year-and-a-half-long journey to get answers. I was lucky to know the space and how to be an advocate for my own care, to finally get answers and treatment for my pain, and to now be healthy again, but I’ve also seen a serious shift in my perspective of the HIT innovation and communications process after having been a seriously sick patient just trying everything possible to get better. Perhaps my sickness wasn’t weakness, it was a superpower of sorts giving me new vision?
It has surprised me that my story matches or mirrors many of those I’ve shared it with in this space. Digital health professionals with many years under their belt, their world rocked by a terrifying health event for themselves or a loved one, and then (with answers or without answers) diving back into their work with fresh eyes and a mission. I’ve also spoken with other patients of all kinds – not currently in this space – that can also see clearly how sharing their own healthcare journeys could positively impact clinical operations and even outcomes.
Let’s talk about the power of patient insight and if/when it should be included in the digital health innovation process. I look forward to chatting with you all as we put one patient shoe on the left foot and one digital health innovator’s shoe on the right.
