Practical Application of AI Research with NYU

AI in healthcare has become a huge topic of interest, but what does the practical application of AI look like? At the Ai4 Conference, we sat down with Vincent J. Major, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Health and Lead in Operational Machine Learning EHR Integration at NYU Lagone Health to learn more about him and his work with AI in healthcare.

Recently, Major and his team have been working on replacing a 13 point scale system created by nurses to rank the level of care each patient needs. Their new AI solution switches this over to a color coded system that takes into consideration the nurses as well as the patients. It analyzes how many nurses are working and when, in order to appropriately distribute the care that the patients need. But applying AI solutions require a lot of data that can be hard to get access to.

So we asked: what are the key data you need for these models and what data do you still wish you could get access to? With the unique position of having Epic Products for almost everything, Major stated “Our bread and butter for data science is patient information. We’re talking about vitals, flow sheets, lab results, order procedures, clinical notes, radiology notes.”

Another big step they were able to take in applying AI to healthcare was a clinical trial in 2020 of a COVID-19 AI model. With a group of 1,000 patients NYU set out to give patients a color coded score on their current conditions. A green score meant that the patient did not need additional care and could be sent home. All of this was done in order to lift some of the burden off of healthcare professionals and keep beds open for patients that needed them. Ultimately though, the AI had no effect on the amount of discharges and NYU.

Lastly, while NYU researchers are doing a lot of working in this field, they don’t do it alone. In order for their research to become integrated into healthcare and used by healthcare professionals they need help. Depending on what area of healthcare they are looking to implement AI into, they turn to the corresponding Epic product app team. “They are used to building the records out, used to putting in the integration, how users see things. So we leave that to them as the experts.” Major said.
