Beyond the Patient: Family-Centered Care and the Future of Health – #HITsm Chat Topic

We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 1/21 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by Erica Olenski (@thegr8chalupa) on the topic Beyond the Patient: Family-Centered Care and the Future of Health.”

We are all prepared for outcomes-based care. Even if the technology isn’t quite there yet to support it, we are thinking of it. We are anticipating it. And we are ready – for the most part.

I have a lingering and burning question regarding outcomes-based care though. When we move to an outcomes-based model and we look at all of the factors involved with an “outcome” – it seems as if our accountability to one another is amplified ten-fold. It then seems to beg questions about our family structures, caregiving practices, and social networks. In an outcomes-based model, we all acquire accountability to one another in an unprecedented way. Successes then, can be celebrated beyond the individual, but failures also highlight the same accountability.

When we speak about outcomes-based care, it’s use radically reimagines how we view our world – let alone the delivery of healthcare. It expands the dialog from one about empathy and dignity to one about community and humanity – and surely amplifies the impact and necessity of mental health, for example. When we dream, imagine, and get excited about what’s ahead for healthcare (oh, and I’m excited!), we must continue to challenge ourselves and reimagine how technology and services can support that vision.

As mental health and other social ills resulting from the pandemic increasingly highlight our interconnectedness within neighborhoods, cities, countries, and the global community, I am perplexed with this challenge of “outcomes-based care” more than ever. And more than ever, I’m encouraged about what’s ahead for healthcare innovation. With the unprecedented global experience Covid-19 brought us, we have an opportunity to challenge ourselves with new information that can potentially deliver on the promise of quality and equitable health outcomes better than ever before.

Topics for this week’s #HITsm Chat:

T1: How should we define a “family” as we move forward into the future of healthcare? Is there a limit to what’s defined as “family?” Do caregivers influence that definition? #HITsm

T2: Was there ever a time where you or someone close to you DIDN’T have the support needed to heal? What happened and what was the outcome? #HITsm

T3: Was there ever a time where you or someone close to you DID have the support needed to heal? What happened and what was the outcome? #HITsm

T4: Is it important to recognize a “family” in the care delivery process? Why or why not? #HITsm

T5: How might we consider the dynamics involved in a “family” when measuring health outcomes? Are relationship nuances even possible to capture with technology today? #HITsm

Bonus: Is the future of healthcare family-centered? If so, should it be? #HITsm
