If you’re a long time reader of Healthcare IT Today, then you know of my love for ambient clinical voice technologies and their potential to reduce the administrative note creation burden that doctors feel every day. One of the leaders in this area is Nuance (Now owned by Microsoft) and their DAX product. One of the criticisms and questions around DAX that I heard was the fact that Nuance was using essentially AI empowered scribes on the back end to help complete notes. This presents two major problems: people are expensive and there is a delay in the note creation. Both are issues that we’ve been watching to see how Nuance addressed them.
It seems like Nuance has at least given some view into how they plan to address these two challenges with their big announcement about DAX Express. In this announcement, Nuance and Microsoft announced what they called the “First Fully AI-Automated Clinical Documentation Application” that will compliment their DAX ambient solution. (Note: I wonder what Ambience Healthcare would think about their “First” headline, but I’ll leave that to others to fight over) The new DAX Express product will be available in private preview this summer and it looks like a full release later this year. Plus, the announcement said that DAX Express would be integrated with GPT-4 which should not be a surprise given Microsoft’s investment in it.
As you can imagine, I had to learn more about DAX Express and dive into the details of what Nuance is planning to offer. I sat down with Diana Nole, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Nuance Healthcare, where she shared more details about DAX Express, how it differs from DAX Ambient Solution, and what the workflow looks like for this new product. We also ask her if there are any humans in the loop in this new “fully automated” solution (Spoiler Alert: There’s not…other than the doctors it listens to).
Nole shared more about how they’re planning to integrate GPT-4 into the product and how this will work with the various EHR platforms. She also talked about when the product will be available for users and what the roll out strategy will look like.
