It is “an open, distributed ledger that can record transactions between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable and permanent way”  . Blockchain was first developed as a means of transaction for the digital currency Bitcoin. The transparency, accuracy and efficiency of blockchain technology have made it attractive for its adoption by Wall Street.
