One of the biggest challenges in health IT is the fact that patient data is spread across multiple systems. While we’d like to think that the EHR stores all the information about a patient, it doesn’t. There are many other systems in a healthcare organization where patient data is stored. One thing we’ve learned over all these years writing about health IT is that the most valuable things often happen at the cross over and that’s definitely true when it comes to bridging the gap that exists between patient data in different systems.
At the HIMSS 2022 annual conference, I was able to sit down with Amato Amarain, CFO, Medical Group at RWJBarnabas Health, and Nora Lissy, RN, BSN, MBA, VP, Healthcare Consulting and Implementation, SME at Dimensional Insight, to talk about this problem and how RWJBarnabas Health has worked to solve this problem so they are able to leverage data from disparate systems.
In the interview, Amarain does a great job sharing his vision and goal when it comes to leveraging data in his organization and why it was so important to not just leverage EHR data, but to pull together data from across all of their various systems. Lissy also shared why doing so is such a challenge and what it takes to really make this a reality.
I also asked Amarain why he didn’t just choose to use his EHR and he shared about the important role of data governance in any project like this. Plus, he shares how his organization is using technology and people to address this challenge. Finally, Lissy, discusses what it really takes for customers to trust the data in these systems.
