In a recent conversation with Zafar Chaudry, MD, MS, MIS, MBA, Sr. Vice President – Chief Digital & Information Officer at Seattle Children’s, and Sunita Pradhan, VP Customer Success Hospital and Health Systems at ELLKAY, it was impressed upon me how important a healthcare organization’s work in data management is to an organization and more importantly their patients. Doing it wrong can have major negative consequences on both those in the organization and the patients it serves.
To address this challenge head on, Dr. Chaudry and his team worked together as partners with ELLKAY to ensure that the legacy data from their multiple EHR and other data sources was not only archived effectively, but that it was then presented back to the end users in a way that met their specific needs. Dr. Chaudry pointed out that this is actually the hard part of any legacy archiving project. Archiving the data is one thing, but presenting that data back to the user in a usable fashion is another which took significant effort and a true partner like ELLKAY to get right.
The good news is that these efforts paid off with satisfied users that had single sign on access to these legacy systems from right in Epic. Along with the end user and patient benefits of a legacy archive, Dr. Chaudry also noted the financial benefits of not having to pay ongoing licensing fees and maintenance fees on legacy software that can be quite significant. Pradhan added that many other parts of the organization benefit from proper data management as well. For example, HIM benefits as they can more effectively do things like ROI (Release of Information) and can make sure that retention policies and purging of old data are done properly.
Pradhan went on to talk about how most organizations are also looking beyond archiving as part of their hospital or health system’s data strategy. Having an archive in place for legacy applications is great, but that’s just the start when it comes to effective data management. She suggested that it’s important that a data management partner be able to help with all of your data management needs.
