Redrick Technologies: Innovating Radiology Workstations with User-Centric Design

Healthcare IT Today recently visited Redrick Technologies in London, Ontario, to explore their cutting-edge radiology workstations. Redrick’s unique approach involves constantly listening to and incorporating customer feedback. The company is a shining example of user-centric design. Their many happy customers are proof that this is not only helps them stand out in a competitive market, but also ensures they remain ahead of their competitors in terms of product design.

Healthcare IT Today first profiled Redrick after seeing their workstations at RSNA22. A video of their workstation is available here on our YouTube channel.

While onsite, we had the chance to sit down with:

  • Greg Patrick, Founder and President;
  • Josh Patrick, Director of Sales; and
  • Steve Reinecke, Director of Business Development

…to learn more about their success.

A History of Listening

Redrick started as a general contractor in construction management. One of their early customers was a local radiology group. This was in the early days of the transition from film-based to digital-based radiology.

“We listened to their problems and it was clear they had ergonomic challenges,” explained G. Patrick. “Together we identified what the issues were. Then we helped them source products, but there was nothing available that had the adjustability they were looking for. So we started to design and develop products that could meet their needs.”

By working together with radiology end-users, and by bringing in skilled ergonomic design experts, Redrick developed a radiology-specific workstation that was unlike anything on the market – one that could support the obscenely heavy monitors (of the time) and yet had the adjustability radiologists needed to be comfortable.

“It took a few years to get the design right,” continued G. Patrick. “It was a challenge, but we eventually overcame it and that became the core of our solution.”

Constantly Evolving User-Informed Designs

Not only are the design of Redrick’s workstations unique, the way they approach their market is unique. The company does not have a standardized catalog of workstation designs that customers choose from. Instead, their designs are constantly evolving with each batch incorporating improvements learned from the last delivery.

“We are never selling last year’s model,” said J. Patrick. “Every station ordered is built with our latest features.”

They just-in-time design approach also allows Redrick to tweak their workstations to fit the exact needs of their customers. Reinecke pointed out the significance of considering the radiologists’ actual work in the reading room environment. Unlike traditional planners who focus on space and monitor counts, Redrick engages with customers to understand specific needs based on the type of radiology work, ensuring the workstation adapts to evolving technologies and workflows.

“Just making great ergonomic furniture that satisfies the needs of radiologists is not enough,” stated G. Patrick. “Putting a good solution in a bad space is a recipe for disaster. So a big part of our offering over the years is creating and optimizing workstations to fit the space they will be residing in.”

Positive Customer Response

Redrick’s user-centric approach to their market has garnered high praise from their customers.

“We are always hearing how thrilled our customers are,” said J. Patrick. “They love having an ergonomic solution that isn’t over-engineered, is intuitive, and does not require a lot of fussing with. They comment on our how our workstations are not distracting with too many settings or unnecessary electronic gizmos. Our workstations support them in the way they want to work.”

“It’s pretty obvious to us that if you want to build a great product that people are going to love, you have to listen to them,” added Reinecke. “It is very easy for companies to lose focus when they don’t listen to customers.”

Redrick is now taking their success in radiology and breaking into other “ologies” like cardiology and pathology. Using the same user-centric approach, the company is confident they can deliver a solution that meets the unique needs of these new customers.

Redrick Technologies’ success story highlights the value of incorporating customer feedback into product development. Their dynamic and user-centric approach aligns well with the ever-evolving needs of healthcare professionals.
