More than 3.9 million consumers selected Affordable Care Act plans on the federal health insurance exchange during the fifth week of open enrollment, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)announced on Dec. 23. Total signups reached nearly 6.4 million since the enrolment period began.

The most recent report covers the period of Dec. 13 to Dec. 19.

“We still have a lot of work to do before the February 15 enrollment deadline, but this is an encouraging start,” said HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell. “People shopped for coverage and signed up – finding more choices and greater competition,” she added.

During open enrollment, HHS is releasing weekly snapshots of preliminary data drawn only from the federal exchange, or CuidadodeSalud.gov, and callers to the federal call center at 800-318-2596.

HHS will produce a more detailed monthly report that includes data from the federal exchange as well as state-run health insurance exchanges.

The most recent snapshot report showed that 30 % of those signing up were new insureds, while 70% were renewing their coverage.

Just over 3.9 million applications were submitted online in the latest week, bringing the total to 6.39 that have selected plans during the enrollement period.

The Healthcare.gov site was visited by nearly 4.2 million consumers during the week, for a total 14 million since enrolment opened. This compares to 160, 630 during the week for the Spanish-language CuidadodeSalude.gov site, and a total 490,191 for the period.

About 2.2 million consumers contacted the call center during the most recent week. They waited for an average of almost 24 minutes on hold. Callers seeking a Spanish-speaking representative waited about a minute and a half.

Almost 1.3 million visitors used the HealthCare.gov “window shopping” tool during the week to explore coverage options available to them. About 160,000 window shopped on CuidadodeSalud.gov.
