The Health Datapalooza conference is a unique annual event. As the playful name suggests, it’s a somewhat countercultural happening, a place for freewheeling and respectfully critical discussion among health data experts. The conference was launched in 2010 by Todd Park, a ground-breaking technologist who was CTO of HHS at the time and was later promoted to be CTO of the United States.
Lucia Savage, Chair of the AcademyHealth Committee on Advocacy and Public Policy and Chief Privacy and Regulatory Officer at Omada Health, explains how, in contrast to most health care conferences, the Datapalooza is “not glitzy” and “not about selling stuff,” but offers “accessible dialog” among policy makers, programmers, patients, and others.
As examples of the high caliber of participation, she says that the Q&A sessions are as valuable as the talks, and that the break-out sessions show what will be big issues in the future.
In this 20-minute video interview, Savage discusses her concerns, which include privacy, inclusivity (making sure that non-Whites and people with limited access to technology have the same access to health care as others), and law enforcement access to health data.
Information blocking, medical misinformation, and Social Determinants of Health are likely to be major topics at the conference.
She also discusses what she feels that lawyers and companies need from the government, which includes clearer rules defining information blocking and guidance about how to recognize good privacy in an app
