CIO Podcast – Episode 9: Natalie Pageler, MD – Telehealth and Digital Health

For the 9th episode of the CIO podcast hosted by Healthcare IT Today, we’re sitting down with Natalie Pageler, MD – CMIO at Stanford Children’s Health.

A few years back I learned that if you really want to understand what’s possible in healthcare, talk to a children’s hospital.  The person who taught me this was from a children’s hospital and illustrated how they were required to do different things than other hospitals because parents of sick children are some of the most demanding in healthcare.  As a father of 4, I totally understand this.  I couldn’t care less about my own health, but when it comes to my children I want the very best.  I won’t dig into the psychology of this and whether it’s right or wrong, but I have seen it’s true that children’s hospitals can teach us so much about patient care.

In this episode, Dr. Pageler doesn’t disappoint as she shares her experience working on telehealth and digital health at Stanford Children’s Health.  She also does a great job highlighting some of the nuances that Children’s Hospitals have to navigate that the rest of healthcare doesn’t have to worry about.  Plus, she shares some of the successes they’ve had at Stanford Children’s hospital with telehealth and digital health.

Here’s a look at the questions and topics we discuss on this episode:

  • Where are you at when it comes to telehealth and digital health adoption? What have been your biggest successes?
  • What’s next on your radar to implement?
  • What’s holding back what you really want to implement? And what do you really want to implement, but don’t quite have what’s needed to do it?
  • Are we seeing the same digital health technologies with adolescent populations as older populations? How do the adoption curves differ?
  • As a CMIO, what’s the key to leading a successful project?
  • What career advice would you give someone who’d like to be a CMIO like you?
