Asynchronous Messaging and Telehealth – #HITsm Chat Topic

We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 7/24 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by John Lynn (@techguy) from @hcittoday on the topic of “Asynchronous Messaging and Telehealth“.

I’ve long been impressed by the power of a simple text.  Many people underestimate what a text message can do.  When you strip down the barriers of communication and are required to simplify the communication into a text, it really does change the communication paradigm in surprisingly good ways.  Plus, being able to asynchronously communicate with someone is extremely powerful.

That’s not to say that a text message is better than a phone call or an in person visit.  Obviously, if you compare them head to head, a phone call or an in person visit will win.  However, that’s the wrong comparison because the reality of life is that a text message can often happen when a phone call or in person visit isn’t possible or would be delayed.  Asynchronous text messaging with patients can be much more effective than other options because they open up communication that wouldn’t happen otherwise and they can accelerate communication.

The reality of healthcare is that our health is constantly changing.  That really does make the case for why we should have more asynchronous messaging in healthcare as opposed to relying on live video and in-person visits for care.  This is why it’s interesting to see many telehealth companies integrating asynchronous messaging in their telehealth platform.  The challenge is that the reimbursement for asynchronous messaging in healthcare hasn’t caught up yet.

Join us for this week’s #HITsm chat where we’ll be talking about asynchronous messaging in healthcare and telehealth.

Topics for this week’s #HITsm Chat:
