Healthcare Inequality – Healthcare IT Today Podcast Episode 40

For the 40th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re talking about healthcare inequality.  Sadly, there are a whole lot of directions we could have taken this discussion and so we’ll no doubt discuss it more in the future.  If there’s something we didn’t discuss in this episode that you think we should, let us know in the comments or on Twitter.

For this episode we wanted to look at some very specific areas of healthcare inequality that have really come to light amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.  Not that we weren’t aware of them before COVID-19, but in most cases the stories have gotten even worse amidst the crisis.  Plus, we always have to splash some IT into the discussion as well.

Here’s a quick preview of the healthcare inequalities we discuss in this episode:

  • Access to Care
  • Access to Digital Health
  • Social Determinants of Health
  • What Can Health IT Companies Do?

Today’s episode is sponsored by Cloudbreak Health.  A fitting sponsor since one of their missions is to Reduce Healthcare disparities.  One of the ways they do this is with their language translation services.  They offer this in a wide variety of options including video remote interpretation, but have also recently integrated these services with others like Epic.  Along with this they have a tele-quarantine and live video telehealth service.  Learn more about Cloudbreak Health at cloudbreak.us.

  • Healthcare disparities are hard-baked into tools and behaviors in healthcare. What is needed is the inclusion of healthcare disparities elimination metrics as MACRA, NCQA and HEDIS quality measures and build in incentives and penalties to encourage compliance.
