Exploring Healthcare 3.0 – #HITsm Chat Topic

We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 12/11 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by Brian Mack (@BFMack and @BrianMiHIN) from @MiHIN on the topic “Exploring Healthcare 3.0“.

Despite the unusual days we are currently navigating, the calendar marches unrelentingly forward. We are now fully immersed in the holiday season and the knowledge that 2020 is (FINALLY) ending. Every new year brings a sense of anticipation and expectation of what is to come in the months ahead. Particularly for healthcare and technology, 2021 promises to be a time of dramatic change as we grapple with the ongoing pandemic and its aftermath, mass-distribution of a vaccine, and operational challenges prompted by the 21st Century Cures Act, the CMS/ONC Final Rules, and anticipation of the Trusted Exchange Framework and Final Agreement (TEFCA).

Healthcare delivery has shifted dramatically at notable inflection points in recent years, and technological innovation has played a central role in these changes:

Healthcare  1.0 – (2004 – 2009) During his 2004 State of the Union address, then President George W. Bush set a “moonshot” goal of transitioning from paper to electronic health records within 10 years. This announcement marked the beginning of what would become a technologically driven transformation across the US healthcare system.

Healthcare  2.0 – (2010 – 2020) The enactment of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) in 2009 included significant funding for a program called HITECH (Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health) that rapidly accelerated the adoption of electronic health records by hospitals and physicians. This was followed by passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, which codified the secure sharing of electronic health information.

Healthcare  3.0 – (2021 and Beyond) Significant strides have been made in electronic health data sharing in the last decade. Yet, national interoperability remains out of reach and the onset of COVID-19 nearly overwhelmed our existing systems. Dramatic gaps in the capacity and continuity of healthcare delivery in the United States were revealed. How we respond to these conditions and the ways that our response corrects and improves care marks the latest dramatic shift in healthcare transformation.

COVID-19 has prompted significant changes in how healthcare is delivered and experienced. The pandemic has also impacted important and ongoing issues that the system was already grappling with including social determinants of Health (SDoH), public and population health, access to care, cost and more. New regulatory requirements such as those referenced above add to that complexity.

This week’s #HITSM Twitter chat will explore what “Healthcare 3.0” will look like, and how technology will contribute to this latest transformational inflection point in a post-Covid world.

Topics for this week’s #HITsm Chat:

T1: What issue or “gap” in the healthcare system was most dramatically revealed by COVID-19? #HITsm

T2: Has the pandemic changed the way we should be thinking about issues like SDoH or Public/Population Health? #HITsm

T3: Does the need for a nationally coordinated response and vaccination strategy increase the urgency for achieving national interoperability? How? #HITsm

T4: In what ways will regulatory changes driven by the ONC/CMS Final Rules or TEFCA help or hinder Healthcare 3.0 transformation? #HITsm

T5: What technology will have the most lasting impact on Healthcare 3.0 transformation? #HITsm

BONUS: Looking into your crystal ball, what will be the most dramatic change will we see in healthcare and/or health IT in 2021? #HITsm
