Cybersecurity’s Impact on Patient Safety and Trust

In discussion of cybersecurity breaches, most people talk about the impact to the organization’s reputation and the financial implications of a breach.  While those are both extremely important, what doesn’t get talked about as much is the impact cybersecurity can have on both patient safety and trust.  Plus, cybersecurity attacks are becoming more and more sophisticated and creating a slew of new patient safety issues.  Each of these incidents works to undermine a patient’s trust in their healthcare institution.

To get a better understanding of these issues and how to combat them, we sat down with the following panel of cybersecurity experts in a discussion hosted by Proofpoint:

  • Chris Convey – VP, Chief Information Security Officer at Sharp Healthcare
  • Tom Stafford – Chief Technology Officer at CDW Healthcare
  • Ryan Witt – Managing Director, Healthcare Industry Practice at Proofpoint

What’s been your experience with the impact of cybersecurity incidents on trust in your organization?  How does it apply to patients?  How does it apply to your own staff trusting IT?  How has COVID-19 impacted this dynamic?  What Business Email Compromise (BEC) or imposter email patterns are you seeing in your organization?  And what are you doing to address this in your organization?
