Do You Trust Google with Patient Data? – Healthcare IT Today Podcast Episode 25

For the 25th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, and we’re asking the question “Do You Trust Google with Patient Data?”

This ripped from the headlines topic is a challenging one with a lot of complexities. For those who missed the news, Google Health has been working with Ascension Health on a number of health IT efforts that included Ascension Health sharing 10s of millions of patient records with Google. Part of the project was called “Project Nightingale” which added to patients’ fears that Google and Ascension were trying to hide this project from patients. Now, the HHS Office of Civil Rights (OCR) is Investigating the arrangement.

In this episode we wanted to dive into the topic of health data sharing and what this will mean for Google and Ascension Health. No doubt, this is just the start of large companies sharing health data to hopefully improve our health system. However, are their boundaries to what should be shared? Should there be a consent or other information process in place to involve the patient? If you care about patient data sharing, then you’ll enjoy this episode of Healthcare IT Today.

Here’s a quick rundown of the ideas and questions we’ll discuss in this episode:

  • Is Ascension Sharing Health Data with Google Legal?
  • What Will Be the Impact of This on Google?
  • What Will Be the Impact of This on Acscension?
  • Is Data Sharing (Without Our Knowledge) Something We Should Just Get Used To?
