Health IT IPOs – #HITsm Chat Topic

We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 8/9 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by John Lynn (@techguy) on the topic “Health IT IPOs”.

For many startup companies, they have big dreams of one day doing an IPO with their company. In many ways this has been glorified by the media and entertainment industries as you see millionaires and billionaires being made through a company’s initial public offering.

Interestingly, health IT hasn’t had nearly as many IPOs as other industries. Much of that is probably due to these companies getting bought before they could IPO. While an IPO is a great outcome for a startup company, purchase by a larger company is also a great result. Another reason we haven’t seen as many health IT IPOs is because it usually takes a decade or so for a company to become large enough for it to make sense. Most Digital Health companies just haven’t been around long enough for this to happen.

That said, we’re starting to see this change. As I shared in my article about 2 Digital Health IPOs and 2 more to come, the health IT IPO is starting to happen and so far they’ve been quite successful. Is this a preview of what’s to come? Is this more a reflection of the current general tech IPO market? Plus, more importantly, what does this mean for healthcare?

Join us at this week’s #HITsm chat where we’ll discuss these questions and more.

Topics for this week’s #HITsm Chat:

T1: Which of the companies that have done an IPO or have announced their IPO intentions will be most successful and why? #HITsm

T2: What health IT companies do you think should and/or will IPO next and why? Are we going to see a bunch more health IT IPOs or is this just a unique time? #HITsm

T3: What’s the impact on healthcare organizations when a company does an IPO? Is it a good or bad result? #HITsm

T4: If you’re a customer of a company, would you rather have them do an IPO or be acquired/merged with another company? Why?#HITsm

T5: What’s been the impact of a number of high profile EHR companies (ie. Epic, MEDITECH, eCW) choosing not to go public? Is this a good thing or a bad one? #HITsm
