For all the jokes people like to make about lawyers, they play an essential part in so many areas of healthcare. Having a health technology lawyer is essential for pretty much every healthcare organization. It doesn’t matter if you’re a startup company or provider organization, having a good lawyer help you navigate and negotiate contracts, processes, and policies is essential.
One of the most experienced healthcare lawyers I know is William F. O’Toole, Jr., Founder of O’Toole Law Group. Having started as an in house lawyer with MEDITECH, he got to see first hand the creation of the health IT industry and associated laws and contracts. Plus, a decade ago he left MEDITECH to go out on his own where he’s brought his extensive experience to a wide variety of clients including hospitals negotiating with MEDITECH and other industry leaders, as well as health IT companies. Startup companies in particular have benefited greatly from his experience and expertise as they establish themselves in this industry.
While at the HIMSS Annual conference, we sat down with O’Toole to talk about his experience in health IT. He shared with us some of the consistent needs he’s seen from both his hospital and vendor clients. Plus, O’Toole shares some of the interesting insights and experiences he’s had over the almost 30 years in healthcare IT.
We also dive into how a health IT startup company should leverage a lawyer. What’s the value of working with a lawyer early? O’Toole shares some of the areas where a lawyer can make an important difference in a startup company. Plus, he shares some of the issues he sees coming in the future for health IT.
If you’re a health IT startup or a MEDITECH hospital, you’ll enjoy learning from William F. O’Toole, Jr.’s experience working as a lawyer for both.
