Blending Marketing and Health IT Solutions – #HITsm Chat Topic

We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 7/10 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by Colin Hung (@colin_hung) on the topic of “Blending Marketing and Health IT Solutions“.

Most healthcare IT solutions use a variety of techniques to accomplish their goals.  Some solutions focus on innovative technology to create a new, more efficient workflow. Other solutions focus on data analytics to better understand the patient and provide better care for the patient. Increasingly, we’re seeing health IT companies leveraging marketing techniques and marketing approaches to deliver more effective solutions.

This shift should have been obvious.

For many health IT solutions, the core of their offering is about engaging patients and encouraging them to take a specific action or modify their behavior in some way. That’s exactly what marketing is designed to do – engage an audience (or an individual) and influence them to take specific actions.

Marketers have long been obsessed with website analytics like how long someone spends on a webpage, what areas of the webpage are people reading/engaging with and how many unique visitors arrive on the various pages. Some pioneering Health IT companies are now applying these same metrics to their solutions to help customers gauge training effectiveness (ie: are people spending too long on one page or have some people never used a page at all), discover areas of improvement (is someone clicking 5 times to accomplish something) and identify super users.

As much as Health IT has borrowed from marketing, so too has marketing borrowed from the world of IT. The concept of agile marketing, for exmaple, is taken directly from agile development techniques – where rapid prototyping, testing and iteration are the norm. This blending of Health IT and marketing has helped bring both of these disciplines closer together – and everyone is winning because of it.

On the next #HITsm chat, we will dive deeper into this mixing of marketing and Health IT. We’ll discuss how we can better apply marketing principles to health IT and vice versa.  We’ll also look at ways marketing can improve healthcare and how we can work to bridge the gap between marketing and IT.

Join us Friday, July 10th at noon ET (9am PT).
