The Future of EHR – #HITsm Chat Topic

We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 12/4 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by John Lynn (@techguy) from @hcittoday on the topic “The Future of EHR“.

Much of health IT has been focused on the EHR for the past decade or two thanks to $36 billion of stimulus money.  Although, the original EHR’s began being implemented over 50 years ago (see my interview with Howard Messing looking at 50 years of MEDITECH as an example).  A lot has changed over those 50 years and we’ve made a lot of progress.  In fact, a lot has changed over the last decade with EHR.

While EHR is at the heart of most healthcare organization’s health IT efforts, EHR isn’t without its problems.  It’s easy for us to take for granted all the benefits of EHR, but it is true that EHRs haven’t fully lived up to many people’s expectations for what is possible and what could be possible.

In this week’s chat, we’ll dive into the world of EHR.  We’ll give it credit where credit is deserved.  Plus, we’ll talk about where it’s deeply insufficient and needs to do better.  We’ll even talk about whether something will come along that will replace the EHR.

Join us for this week’s HITsm chat, as we talk about the future of EHR in healthcare.

Topics for this week’s #HITsm Chat:

T1: When did you first encounter EHR? What was your experience with it? #HITsm

T2: What are some of the benefits that EHR has provided? #HITsm

T3: Which are the biggest areas that you thought EHR would benefit us, but it hasn’t yet? Why hasn’t it? #HITsm

T4: What do you see on the horizon when it comes to EHR? What do you expect to happen with them in the next decade? #HITsm

T5: Is there something on the horizon that could replace EHR? Why or why not? #HITsm

  • A couple of things – This is on Twitter, correct? That isn’t made clear in this post. Also, EHR = Electronic Health Record, correct? Someone who is just starting in the field might not be clear about that.

    Thanks! Looking forward to it!

  • Richard,
Thanks for asking. Yes, this is on Twitter. I’ve been thinking I should add a section that provides more details for those who haven’t participated in the Twitter chat in the past.

EHR is Electronic Health Record. Some prefer EMR (Electronic Medical Record), but we largely use them interchangeably at this point.

I look forward to seeing you at the Twitter chat.
