Transplant clinics in Sweden will see digital health startup Pilloxa’s innovation be deployed in a new collaboration with Novartis division Sandoz Nordics to improve medication adherence, announced today.

Founded in 2015, Pilloxa has developed a platform that consists of an intelligent pillbox, an app and a cloud solution, along with data driven services, that aims to help patients take their medication on time.

The pillbox, pictured above, has built in sensors to detect when patients take their dose, with 14 compartments and a LED lighting up to notify them when it’s time to do so, and is connected to their mobile phones.

Patients receive a notification in case they forget to take their medication, and the app also includes a medicines list, a dashboard giving information about their medication history, and a so-called “motivational tool”.

According to the startup's website, clinical trials of the solution are currently being conducted, but early data suggests "patients using Pilloxa are more adherent".

WHY IT MATTERS

Pilloxa’s founders say they recognised the "need to facilitate medication adherence" during a clinical innovation fellowship programme run by the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology, Karolinska Institute and Stockholm County Council.

The startup recently raised money from Swedish angel investors, was awarded funding from the Swedish innovation agency Vinnova and EIT Health, and also announced a collaboration with Bayer AB, a subsidiary of Bayer AG.

ON THE RECORD

“Pilloxa strives to be at the forefront of a new paradigm within personalised healthcare. We are happy to partner up with Sandoz to tackle the problem of inadequate adherence to medication and we strongly believe that this will increase quality of life for transplanted patients,” said Francesco Mazzotta, CEO of Pilloxa.

“Together Sandoz and Pilloxa go beyond the pill and aim to empower the patients to improve their own outcomes," Mazzotta added.
