We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 9/24 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by Abner Mason (@abnermason) from @ConsejoSano_US on the topic “Culture’s Role in Healthcare.”
Contrary to the image that “Leave It to Beaver” might have you believe, the U.S. was never a monoculture. It’s one of the best things about this nation — millions and millions of people, each with their own culture and set of values, call this place home. But some institutions have never figured out how to embrace multiculturalism, a problem that’s poised to grow as the country becomes more diverse.
Healthcare’s struggle to engage, earn the trust of, and care for diverse people comes with high stakes. That’s never been clearer, as COVID-19 is more likely to affect, hospitalize, and kill Black, Latinx, and Indigenous Americans. And while the pandemic spotlighted health inequities, their effects extend far beyond this crisis.
If the healthcare system is to overcome these challenges, we must address culture’s role in everything from trust and patient engagement to care and outcomes. It’s the only way to create the future that this multicultural nation needs.
Join us for this week’s #HITsm chat where we’ll discuss the following questions and topics.
